SAFE Confidentiality Statement

At SAFE we need to discuss sensitive issues and we value our clients' privacy. There are strict rules and procedures to prevent information about clients being given to anyone who does not have a right to it. When we need to contact anyone else to give or receive information about clients we will usually explain this to the client and ask for their permission in writing before we proceed.

There are three exceptions to this rule, when safety becomes more important than confidentiality. SAFE will not guarantee confidentiality in the following circumstances:

1. When the safety of another person is at risk, such as if client attending the SAFE Programme was having unsupervised access to a child

2. When the welfare of an adolescent or child is at risk. This might happen, for example if a client tells us about a child he or she has abused and that child has not had the help they might need because family members are not aware of the abuse

3. When there is a risk of suicide or self-harm to the client or a risk of violence by the client towards another person.

In situations such as these the need to breach confidentiality would usually be discussed with the client first. Hopefully some agreement would be reached as to the best way to handle the situation.

There may be times when family members share information with a therapist that they do not wish to share with the person who has abused or with other family members. Similarly, there may be things that the person who has abused may share with his / her therapist that he / she does not want family members to know. Unless the safety or welfare of someone is at stake, these confidences will be respected. We may, however, recommend that the information is shared where this seems important. In such situations, the therapist can discuss the best ways to share the information and provide support for doing this.

Information about clients at SAFE will be kept in the client's personal file which will be kept in a locked filing cabinet in a locked room in our building. You may request to see information held about you by SAFE. Requests to see information should be made in writing to the CEO.
