Adult Treatment Programme

General Information

Research indicates that 93% of abusers who complete one of SAFE’s programmes are successfully rehabilitated.  A range of specialised programmes are offered for male and female clients, adolescents, children aged 10-12 years, Maori clients, offenders with an intellectual disability and internet offenders, especially child pornography offenders.  Typically a programme runs for 12 to 24 months after which SAFE provide on-going support and supervision so clients can safely regain their place in the community.  Families and partners are also offered counselling and support, giving them the knowledge and resources they need to prevent abuse happening again.  The following information is for the Adult Programmes. Information on the other Programmes can be accessed from the menus above.

The Adult SAFE programme caters for both male and female clients and aims to change their abusive behaviour so they are able to go on and live a healthy life in the community.

Referrals to the programme may be made by the client, or via the Courts, Department of Corrections, CYFS, health professional, or family.

Note: around 60% of SAFE’s adult clients have never been convicted of their abusing behaviour.

The Cycle of Offending

Clients of the programme are taught the Cycle of Offending and learn to recognise how it applies to their own behaviour.  The way to stop sexual offending is to ‘escape’ from the cycle.  This involves breaking old habits and learning new behaviours.

Programme Overview

After an initial assessment, the client joins the programme and is appointed an individual therapist.  During the next 12-24 months, they work with this person and also attend regular group therapy sessions.

A weekend camp is a part of the group therapy and allows more intensive work to occur away from the distractions of everyday life.

Family counselling is an important aspect of the programme and a SAFE therapist will meet regularly with the client’s family or support people as needed.

About once every three months, all those involved in the treatment of the offender will meet to review their progress and to set goals for the next three months.

NOTE: All adult clients must identify at least one family member or support person who is willing to be in contact with SAFE and the client throughout the duration of their therapy.  SAFE staff will be able to discuss this at the time of referral.
