Treatment Success Data Adult Treatment Effectiveness Without treatment, up to 25% of convicted child sex offenders will be re-convicted of another similar offence within 5 years. With a full treatment programme, the corresponding re-conviction rate has been shown to be 5%. In 1998/99 a major study was undertaken, commissioned by the Corrections Department, NZ Government, of the main sexual offender treatment programmes in the country, including the programmes at SAFE. It found that each programme was operating in accordance with internationally accepted best professional practice guidelines, and that individuals on the programmes were benefiting in terms of reducing their risk of re-offending. In 2003 a further study was undertaken by Drs Ian Lambie and Malcolm Stewart of Auckland University, looking at re-offending rates for adults referred by the Corrections Dept. Youth Treatment Effectiveness Typically, fewer than 10% of young people who have completed a treatment programme repeat their sexually harmful behaviour. Studies have shown that young people who do not complete a treatment programme are around 13% more likely to repeat their sexually harmful behaviour than those who have completed a treatment programme. * *Nisbet, I., Rombouts, S., & Smallbone, S.
